Choosing a birthday gift for a senior is a bit more challenging than choosing a gift for a younger person. Seniors might say they 'don’t need anything.' However, elderly seniors are often delighted with a thoughtful gift that is both practical and unique.

The best way to choose a great gift for a senior is to ask the following questions:
What are the seniors’ special interests or hobbies? Try finding the senior a birthday gift related to their interest or hobby. For example, if the senior likes to fish, reserve an afternoon on a fishing charter on a nearby lake, or buy him a new fishing pole. If the senior loves genealogy, consider a local genealogy class.

Do the seniors have any physical limitations, e.g., low vision or arthritis? As seniors age, they often begin to struggle with low vision due to macular degeneration or glaucoma. Find a practical birthday gift, such as a talking calculator.

If they have arthritis, consider the giant door knob for handling door knobs more easily.

Are the seniors grandparents? Would they enjoy a gift with a grandma or grandpa theme? Some grandparents love a birthday gift that acknowledges that they are a special grandma or special grandpa. Try a "You put the Grand in Grandmother" afghan, or a "Grandchildren Spoiled Here" Doormat, or a "Grandparents are Special People" license plate. For other grandparent birthday gift ideas, see our Grandparent Gift Ideas section.

Are the seniors sentimental- would they enjoy a personalized poem from you? Seniors often enjoy a heartfelt message from you telling them what they mean to you. A personalized poem for dad, a poem for mom, a grandma poem or grandpa poem can do just that. This birthday gift idea is both sentimental and heartfelt, and can be treasured forever.

Are the seniors nostalgic? Would they enjoy a gift commemorating their birth year? What about a birthday newspaper which tells the events that occurred the month the senior was born? Makes a unique birthday gift idea.

Of course the best gift idea for grandparents, or best gift idea for a senior is your time. Remember to make time for the seniors you love, whether it be through email phone or a personal visit. Enjoy shopping for your treasured senior.

if she's still pretty young to u, it sure means that she is young at heart. since you havent seen her for a long time, a surprise visit on her birthday would be good enough, which I'm sure you would. A birthday cake could be an idea. Remember it's the thought that counts, however, you will also have to show this "thought" in a way. Spending time, talking to her, understamding her problems would be the best birthday present.

I love the idea of a crystal beaded bracelet that is handmade. You can go to any craft store and get instructions on how to make a bracelet. Your grandma will treasure something that you made especially for her more than any store bought gift. Grandmothers are all the same when it comes to their grandchildren, they love them and treasure their handmade gifts.
