If you want to go by technicalities, all of them are final in the sense that none of them in the series have a sequel in chronological order. I know, I know, FFX-2 is a sequel of X, the sequels from VII still stem from VII. They all have different characters(some stick around like Biggs, Wedge, and Cid), story lines and worlds. But chronologically they are technically final...I hope that makes sense. In other words FFX-2 was not FFXI, therefore not technically a sequel(chronologically), more like an extension. I know I'll probably get flamed for this but I thought I'd put an interesting twist to the answer since I have asked the question several times myself.

See here's the thing. When Square-Enix was still Squaresoft and they were starting out, they released a lot of games that bombed. I mean they stunck like hot meat. So when they nearly went bankrupt, they released Final Fantasy, because it was their Final attempt to make a good Fantasy game before they dissapeared, and it took off. So now they name all their games FINAL Fantasy in memory of the time they nearly lost it all.

Maybe it's a kind of collection, together making a library of one final fantasy. I dunno, but I like them.
