bc you'd be a fool not knowing what your writing about. Written words last longer than spoken words too, and stick around longer to keep giving you trouble if your wrong and you think your right. Don't make stuff up, anyone can do that.

this phrase means... you should only write about things either that you have researched or what you have experienced yourself.
You have to research things thoroughly to make sure you get things right, EG: have you seen the movie the illusionist? the movie is based in the 1800s or maybe evern earlier... but their are problems.. such as the duchess rides like a man on a horse not side saddle as ladies would in that era.. she also wears pants at the end of the movie.. which women never did until the 20th century. It was certainly after cars wree invented.
If you dont write what you know about there will be holes in your story for those who read/view it to pick at which often takes away from th entertainment of the book.

hope this helps

That is so true. The devil is in the details and that's why writing takes a lot of research. You have to know what the details are. You either write from own experience or research whatever you want to write about, so that you can describe it like you were there.

Because many writers think they can write something they aren't either schooled in the subject matter, or they're in to deep in something which is confusing and complex towards the average reader.

Writing what you know as opposed to what you don't know will save you a lot of headaches and public embarrassment later on down the line.

Without reading any of the other responses
It means that you (or any writer) should only take from their personal experiences (what they have seen, done, or partaken of) when they write.
It lends an air of honesty, truth and credibility to the writings.

In my opinion this phrase means that you should only pen down what you know(and which you know is correct, not feel, not think, but know that it is correct)For you never know who might read it.

It will only be believable if you know what you're talking about. If you've lived it and can really give it life, your writing will be much stronger.
