Look at the back.If there are small openings behind the stones (on the backside) chances are it is real.If it is a large stone, breath on it as your would to fog a mirror,if it fogs it is not real.Condinsation evaporates instantly on diamonds,so quickly infact, that you never see it.Also look for the gold or silver mark on the inside of the meteal band. You can look up pics of the silver and gold markings online and compare it with your findings on the inside of the band.It is a very small mark to show that it is indeed silver or gold.Silver will say 925 and I forget what gold will be ( look up online).Usually if the band is real, you have a shot of real stones.Hope I helped!Good luck!

A real diamond will cut glass. If your stone cuts glass, then it's a diamond. If not; it's not.
Buy a loupe. It's that little black thingy you see jewelers holding up to one eye. Diamonds have clarity and depth and fire. Cubic zirconias do not.
Finally, I once had a large cubic zirconia ring. It was in a nice setting and passed for a more expensive diamond. Unfortunately, I forgot to take it off when using ammonia to clean some windows. The stone never sparkled again.

I used to work for Jacob the Jeweler and before that I didn't know a thing about diamonds AT ALL....the simplest way I could say that you should be able to tell the difference is that a real diamond will shine even when light is not directly hitting it, for instance, in a dimly lit area...a fake one will shine perfectly when light hits it...

Try to scratch some glass with it - if it cuts the glass then it may be a diamond but only a gemologist can tell for sure.

The cutting glass thing doesn't work, because cubic zirconia also cuts glass.
Look at it under black light. Diamonds will usually glow blue, cubic zirconia will glow mustard yellow, and glass will not glow at all.

See if anyone is actually looking for it. Also I don't know any other way w/o ask. I guess you could see if it can cut glass.

I agree - if it cuts glass it is real.
If you want to casually find out you can ask a jeweler it was a gift/heirloom and you want to know how to take care of it.
He will tell you real or synthetic.

try scratching glass with it, if its paste it will not mark it, if it's a diamond it will cut and leave a scratch.
