And mainstream society believes that these Evangelicals are under the same spell....

Then who is right? And how can that be determined in a fair, impartial way?

Think about the issues - Homosexuality, Evolution, Stem Cell, NRA/Gun Ownership, etc. etc...

I know that everyone does not fit neatly into one box or the other... but there are some general ways that Evangelicals and Fundamentalists think about these issues...

It will never be fair and impartial. As long as we live in a democracy, there will always be a dissenting opinion.

I am an evangelical but I do not think that homosexuals are condemned to hell; the Bible says that all sins are equal but I speed when I am driving. I am in no way to say that someone who is gay is less important or less of a person than I am.

I don't believe that anyone should be allowed to wield a gun, I do believe in evolution to a point and I do think that stem cell research is okay.

While it sounds dumb, if evangelicals are against such things, then why did their God put them there? If mainstream society thinks we are such an evolved human race, how did we become so advanced in six thousand years?

It's a vicious cycle and it is all based on each person's own opinion. I just try to ignore it because some people are just too shallow to open their ears to someone else's opinion.

These are choices that should be made on an individual level, for the most part. The reason they aren't is that some people want to impose their will and way of life on others.
Most christians think that they have the right to dictate how others lead their lives--hence their opposition to things like gay marriage, evolution, stem cell research, etc. I personally think that these people should mind their own business. If they don't want to benefit from stem cell research, then fine. They can boycott doctors who use the advances that come from that research. If they don't want to be gay or in a gay marriage, then fine. They don't have to be. If they don't want to have an abortion, then they are free to have as many children as they want and to boycott doctors who perform them. If they don't want their children to learn science, they can homeschool them.
But, they should get out of other people's lives and stop trying to dictate to society at large, because quite frankly, it is none of their business.

So true. The problem is we have diametrically opposed world-views. There can NEVER be resolution because someone who believes in an ultimate authority or power will never compromise. I will die for my faith and beliefs and probably will if things continue to play out the way they are. I will NEVER think homosexuality is not a sin, I will NEVER believe in evolution, I will NEVER think that it is OK to have an abortion. I will not compromise.

All we can do is look at as many scientific studies as possible. If someone wants to claim that a study (showing homosexuality is caused by natal hormones) is satan's lies, there's not much you can do for them.

unfortunately, reality could be a total lie, so there is no way of knowing for sure who is right
