Should paternity testing be required before the father's name is registered on the Birth Certificate? Wouldn't this solve problems such as the Howard K. Stern nightmare?

100% yes. It's a great conforting level for the Father to know for sure that the child is there kid.

And with some states having some weird laws about child support, it's absolutely necessary to know from the beginning. In some states, if you are on the birth certificate as the father, and then later on are determined to not be the father, you are responsible for the child support until the last kid is 18. Even if the real father comes into the childs life, you are still responsible.

I ran out and got a paternity test right after the birth of my child, even know I was 100% sure. It really took away any of the doubt.

Actually, where I live, New Jersey, there is a law which states that unless the father is claiming paternity he cannot be listed on the birth certificate. In fact, my wife's birth certificate does not have her parents' names at all.

Paternity testing might be good but this will entail so much expenses and will be burdensome in registering live births. Testing must only be made on cases with irregularities.
