Recently I came to a great realization- I have a greater potential of finding happiness seeking companionship in people I call friends, rather than in people who say I am indebted to them. I know this makes sense, but it goes against everything I have ever been taught. My dad always says, "Blood is thicker than water," and what he means is that family is stronger than friendship. Do you agree with him? Why or why not? All answers are welcome!!!

Hi...Well, I find that friends are more reliable than family in some situations. Family some times make it their business to be in your business where a friend will just support what ever you decide. I do agree that Blood is thicker than water but it also can dump on you too. I would pick my friends hands down everyday. Hope that helps.

i believe family is stronger than friendship in long run but in short run, friendship is more important. The reason i say this is because no matter what, your family will not suddenly one day throw you away and say they won't want you anymore. No matter how bad the situation is or how bad your relationship with your family, there is always some part inside of them that they still care about you. That's the long run. But family is not usually always close to you or make you comfortable to tell you everything as there maybe age differences or opinion differences. that's when friends come to place.

I do agree with it but I do rely on my friends more as well. I think in most situations go to your friends but sometimes it's something you really need to talk to your family about. I mean I don't go up to my dad and say "Hey dad, what did we do in math today?" Or "Omgsh that guy is soo hot what do you think?"

And emotions wise, most of the time it's my family that hurt me so why would I want to go to advice to the person that put me down there in the first place. Friends are wounderful to have ^_^

I have to disagree with your dad. We can't pick our family members and my family like many others are not close at all.

I have always relied on my wonderful friends. I got to choose THOSE!
They are perfect in my eyes and I couldn't be happier.

Yes. Blood is thicker than water and often causes the pipes to clog up.

Put it this way.If you found out right now that we were having some national disaster, who would you call first?I have about 4 very close friends that I've had for 14 years or more, but if I knew my days were limited I would want to be with my family.

i think u and me hev one thing in common but one thing im sure of parents push us away to that extend we become very close to our friends and because sometimes in some families they isolate their children by saying who is better than who and i agree with ur dad coz ur friend is your worst enemy not all friend are good friends so dont be too close to friends and ur family would never turn their back on u, maybe try to find something which you lyk and your family lyk doing and do it to regain the companionship.

well, maybe at some points in your life your friends mean more to you...maybe because you can choose them, maybe because you can relate more to them,
but your parents will always be meaningful to you, and sometimes more than your friends.
i think it just changes....for different ages, different situations, different moods....stuff like that

Personally, I don't...but it seems my kids do...I swear that everything I say to them has to be said by one their friends before they believe it. When i was a kid,,my mom's word was golden..I used to tell my friends, "Ask my mom, she knows everything." lol
