When I was young - my father would take off from work and we would go to Mass at St. Patrick's church. We'd go to lunch afterward.
At one time, I was an Irish dancer - so it was a big deal with parties and performances.
I've shared the traditions of cards and wearing green with my own kids and grandkids.
Don't really need to drink - and green beer is icky!

Every day for a couple of weeks before March 17 the leprechauns sneak in when nobody is looking and make a mess that the kids have to clean up. (It's little pay back time for us parents)
The kids set traps for the leprechauns (hoping to catch one and get his gold)
On St Pat's day we all wear green (so the leps won't pinch us)
The leprechauns usually leave something good behind in amongst their last mess.
