Mine is a fan that runs all year long.

I would have to agree the fan is a great option, and I was using one for years. However, upon the death of said fan, I went looking around for a synthetic white noise option.

I found a rather spendy option at Sharper Image (not a place I normally shop but ...) and tried it out. Unfortunately, the standard options I tried (rainstorm, thunderstorm, etc.) didn't work because I found myself subconsciously finding a pattern in the noise which ruins the effect. That is, until I found one particular white noise ...

Airplane.

Yes, it generates a steady, non-repeating noise that is very, very reminiscent of the dull, muffled sound a jet engine makes in high altitude flight. Fabulous white noise that has aptly replaced my beloved, though deceased, fan. Enjoy.

definately!!
i have to have something onwhen i go to sleepor it drives me crazy!! not a tv though, usually a fan, but now i have an air purifier that has three settings, so i turn it up at night and it gets pretty loud.
so much easier to fall asleep!! and peacefull!!
i also can here the filter in my turtle aquarium. nice combination!!
and i have a ceiling fan that is always on. makes some noise and feels good since its right over my loft bed.

the best part is- all three are not only making noise but actually serve a purpose! :D

I'm partially deaf in one ear and because of this I also have tinnitus. White noise is great for tinnitus, and I especially like ocean and rain sounds. If I don't have a white noise machine available, I like to fall asleep with the radio tuned to a talk program.

a fan. Practical in warm weather and blocks out a lot of noise. I sometimes put on sounds of rain and thunder from my computer if i feel there is going to be a lot of noise through out the night. Plus, it is relaxing.

I have a white noise maker next to my bed. I play the sound of a waterfall. Sounds exactly like a fan, though. I use it because every little sound wakes me up.

I listen to rain forest on soundscapes, but I don't think that's considered and actual "white noise"
