I was just wondering... I haven't had sex, but I'm pretty involved in sports though... I think my hymen is torn, but how can I tell for sure (without having sex)

Not to sound to graphic at all... but whenever I masturbate I don't have any pain at all down there

well - I was able to see mine with a mirror and a good light. Have you penetrated during masterbation? It could be gone but who cares you know you are a virgin

Your hymen is simply a thin piece of tissue inside the vaginal canal. There is no way you could see it. The only way to visualize is requires a vaginal exam, in the doctor's office, the same kind of exam done when they do a pap smear. There is no other way to see it. Even so, the hymen isn't like some tamper proof seal. It varies from woman to woman, in thickness and how much of the canal is covered. In some women it is thick, some very thin. In some ladies, it nearly completely spans the vaginal canal, in others it is congenitally absent. And there are all variants in between. If you are active, or if you use tampons, it may have been either stretched or broken- if it was even there to begin with. If you are really curious, you can make an appointment with a gynecologist for an exam, and simply ask the doctor if he/she sees evidence of one. Not that it makes much difference for anything. The absence of a hymenal membrane means nothing, so far as virginity is concerned. Virginity simply means you have not been penetrated by a man. You are still a virgin, hymen or not- until you have sex the first time. If you are concerned with having to provide proof of virginity, as in producing the bloody sheets next day- that also might not happen even if you had an intact hymen. A considerate partner taking his time could simply stretch it without tearing the tissues, in which case there would be very little blood at all.

It differs from woman to woman.
It cannot be seen from the outside, as it is located high up in the vaginal tract. It varies in size and thickness, occasionally it can be absent all together.
Sport should not tear it, tampons should not tear it.
You won't really know unless you have a doctor examine you which involves them looking into the vagina with a special magnifying tool. The average person would not recognise the hymen if they saw it. But why would you think yours is torn? You can't feel it, nor see it. Did you know that NOT all women even feel their hymen break? It may not even break, it may just stretch away. Some have pain, others feel nothing. And neither does the man, for that matter.. he simply relies on the woman for a response or some spotting, which may not occur either!
Remember it is not the hymen that defines you as a virgin, but the absence of sex.
Edit:
Masturbation, as long as it doesn't involve penetration, will not affect your hymen and it should never result in pain. Any penetration, however, may result in a break.

Well, I'm a virgin (meaning someone who has never had sex when it comes to the medical definition) and my hymen got broken when I had my first pelvic exam and pap smear because the dr used a regular sized instrument called the speculum (the instrument used during the exam). The only reason I knew it was because I could actually feel the remnants when I have had to insert medication in to my vagina.

But falls and certain kinds of sports can cause the hymen to break.

I have also seen further in to my vagina by looking at with a mirror, but when I discovered the first time that my hymen had been broken was by feel.

the hymen is pretty high up in the vagina -most tampons do not tear it upon insertion. it is not unusual to rupture it during sports and this can happen at any time. visit Planned Parenthood for an exam to confirm. know that the hymen doesn't affect your health in any way and if it's torn, it's okay.

Hymens have many different structures that vary form woman to woman. It is usually covering the orifice to the vagina, an if you spread your lips you could see it. But if you look down there and you see that there is no skin covering and it seems like you can penetrate or insert something in there, then that means it has been torn.
