Agoraphobia affects your every day life. It can prevent people from even leaving their houses to go to work or to the store. With other phobias you're able to avoid the things that distress you. With Agoraphobia you can't avoid the entire outside world, although some people try.

Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder which primarily consists of the fear of experiencing a difficult or embarrassing situation from which the sufferer cannot escape.

Agoraphobics may experience severe panic attacks in situations where they feel trapped, insecure, out of control, or too far from their personal comfort zone. In severe cases, an agoraphobic may be confined not only to their home, but to one or two rooms, and they may even become bed-bound, or a recluse.

A phobia is an irrational fear of an object, situation, or basically anything.

I would say that it is different in that it is more debilitating than most. If you can't fly, it can mess up travel plans; If you are afraid of heights, you might not be able to do business in a high rise. But an agoraphobic can't do anything that can't be done from their home. MUCH more limiting.

I believe agoraphobia is literally 'fear of the market place'. Which translates to fear of open spaces - being in a large grocery store, any unfamiliar place.
