What might could be the advantage of working for a boss whose personal characteristics were different from yours rather than working for someone similar to yours?

Your part as an employee is to enhance his hope of success. You may not agree with how he holds himself. His demure might be less then your own; but if you prove to him that you are an asset to his company,not a hindrance, and worthy of making him successful, then he might just let up and concentrate on what you bring into his company- not take away from it. Get him to believe you can do something for his company that no one else can and hope and pray for a promotion that could be on it's way to you.
