It definally depends on your skill level, and what type of dance you are interested in. I have been dancing since I was three. I hope when I grow up to become a professional dancer, but it's very hard to if your still a child. I take dance lessons at a studio with some of the best dancers in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The time it takes also depends on the level of the teacher that is teaching you.

Hope this helps!

Everyone is answering this question as though being able to get a performing job in dance is a clear-cut end point in your training when the fact is that only a small fraction of advanced female dancers manage to make even a partial living from dance. Most paid dancers can't even make a partial living from their performances, so the bulk of their income comes from teaching or other jobs. Only about 2% of advanced female dancers in all styles have full-time jobs as performers.

It all just depends because different companie look for different age ranges and a different type of person. If you are looking to become professional, folllow your heart and don't let anything hold you back.
