Depends on which side of the fence you are on to determine if they were justified.
First of all the previous response is incorrect in that he says the Catholics, not Christians, were the cause-----Roman Catholics were the only Christian religion at the time of the crusades.
At the beginning the reason for the crusades was that the Muslims took over and destroyed the Holy city of Jurusalem (sp) as well as the rest of the Holy Land and were performing genocide on both Jews and Christians. From a Christian view point, it seems justified but from a Muslim viewpoint no.
The later crusades, including the children's crusade, were done in both a spirit of adventurism and a desire of world dominance--and that seems wrong in my mind

Based on the information given to the Christian (note that it wasnt Catholic as they were still essentially a unified church under Papal rule at that point) Church when they began the first crusade, yes. Based on the true information that was not available then, no.
Following crusades vary.
Look for some Muslim writings on the Crusades if you can, also finding very early accounts from the Christian perspective would help (after they arrived but before the truth got covered up in all the craziness of fighting a losing battle)

This question is not so easy to answer as it seems to be because History, as Napolean has said, is a lie which everyone believes. It should be dealt within the context of historical facts. First, that the Jeruslam is a sacred place for all the three contenders i.e.Jews, Christians and Muslims. Secondly, it should be noted that during the Muslims' rule, the city and vicinity was peaceful, allowing the people of all three religions to freely exercise their religious activities. Thirdly, that after the conquest of the City by the Christians in 1089 or 1090, the Christians committed great cruelties, cited by Historians like Gibbon. Lastly, that the Crusades were not aimed at eradicating some evil or menace, but those were for the sake of power and fame as in the case of Richard (the Lion Hearted). A detailed account can be found in the works of renowned historians like Gibbon and others, who are themselves Christians.

No. And it was the Catholics, not the Christians, who started them. Nothing justifies the killing and horror that was inflicted.
