Well if it's a trans axle Like FWDs and cars like Ferrari Corvette Lotus have sorta yes .But if it is your typical RWD car no there not.In either case yes they can be expensive to fix.

No. The gearbox has a set of gear ratios that can be selected (either by you or automatically) - technically, the final drive splits the power to the two drive wheels, and the differential allows one wheel to speed up or slow down while turning (thus the name: differential, referring to the way it permits a difference in speed between the wheels.)

Of course, in a front-wheel-drive, these are all housed inside the same casing (the transaxle), but internally, they are usually kept separate. In rear-wheel drive cars, the final drive and differential is at the rear, between the wheels - the gearbox is usually (but not always) attached directly to the back of the engine.

Differentials aren't usually all that expensive. Gearboxes are more expensive. If your car is front-wheel-drive, then you will be replacing both at once - it'll cost quite a bit.

Good luck!

No, they're quite different. The gearbox is the transmission. It's how you match engine speed to how fast you're traveling. Manual transmissions rarely go bad and they're cheaper to fix if they do. Automatics are expensive to fix. They are both expensive to remove and replace in a front wheel drive car, which throws in an additional problem. Front wheel drive cars have a transaxle; everything is in the same box. Rear wheel drive cars are much easier as far as getting them out and back in. Plus, they're separate. The differential is at the axle and lets one wheel go faster than the other as you go around a corner. As I said before, it's a package in a transaxle and the only cars that you can get them out of and back into easily are old Corvairs and original VW Beetles.
