Mel Gibson was born on 3 January 1956, in Peekskill, New York, USA. Mad Max was filmed in the last quarter of 1978, and released on 12 April 1979 (Australia). So Gibson would have been 22 during filming.

Oh god, really a Mad Max 4? Why, why...it's not needed and where will it fit? It can't be a prequel and let's be honest the format was tiring by the time we reached Tina, the kids and the dome! If and I mean if; if there has to be another part to the saga then it must at least be with the right guy and that has to be Mel. We all know him as this character and unless there's going to be one heck of a shower scene, how on earth can you swing it to being someone else? I'm not 100% against remaking or revisiting certain characters, and I know that Bond and Batman have had different leading men with varying degrees of success but they don't really follow set time lines whereas Max has. We have seen how, and why, he became mad, we saw him become the Road Warrior and then we saw him begin to find his way back into the world a little by the third outing. It doesn't have much more to offer and would almost certainly be better off being left to stand alone. My biggest concern (and I'll have to start doing some research now to find out who's directing, writing etc), is that we don't get "Son of Max" appearing that would truly be a step too far.....all together now...."2 men enter - 1 man leaves, 2 men enter 1 man leaves, 2 men enter.............."

Mel Gibson was born in 1956.
Not taking into consideration months of filming or anything like that, he would have been 23 when it was released, so about 22/23 when he made it.
