It's like, when there are three people in the back of a car, whoever sits in the middle has to put one foot on the hump or sit with their feet parted, causing an discomfort. Don't you agree? Does the "hump" have justifiable cause? In my eyes, it's just a burden.

It's somewhere to put the exhaust pipe, and sometimes also the drive shaft (if the car is rear-wheel-drive.) Otherwise, they would hang down below the car and get damaged very easily. The hump is a little larger than the exhaust pipe because it also needs to have room for air circulation - otherwise, the heat from the pipe would melt the carpet (if it didn't just set the car on fire.)

try kneeling down and looking under the car - you can usually see what's inside the hump from underneath.

To protect vulnrable stuff that runs from the front to the back of the car. Eg. exhaust pipe, drive shaft (rear wheel drive or 4x4 only), rear brake hydraulics, handbrake cable.

If these were just hung from the bottom of the car and you grounded it, the car would be absolutely screwed, as opposed to merely needing the underside recoated to prevent rust.

It's there to allow middle of the road drivers to have enough road clearence over that annoying hump in the middle of the road.
