Well it's going to sound whacky, but it works....put aluminum foil..shiney side up in your bath tub...yes...told you it was whacky. place your items on top of the foil....put in maybe two handfuls of dishwashing powder, (for your dishwasher)...fill up with HOT water, let it soak till cook and wipe them down...you're done! You can do a lot like that at once, which is what I like about it. I heard something about ketchup too, but have never done that one. Good luck!

The aluminum foil with hot water will also work in a small sink or bowl. I have added baking soda, not powder, to the water. Before all the phosphate ban there was a powdered cleaning product called s--c and span, which was basically tri-sodium phosphate. This worked then but the product has been reformulated.

The baking soda in a paste is a mild tarnish cleaner. I have even used toothpaste on mild tarnish. As to the ketchup, it works on copper but takes alot of work.

I know it is important to think green these days, but to really do a good job, silver cleaner from the grocery store may be needed. Once cleaned, the silver can be wiped over periodically with a cloth to prevent tarnishing. Our air and the pollutants cause the tarnish so it may be best if possible to wrap silver in toweling. Never use plastic, especially saran wrap or you will be asking how to remove it., because it will stick.

(I could not write out the complete name of the s & s product because last time Yahoo censored me as using an ethnic slur. However, it is the name of a legitimate product in my Harris-Teeter grocery store. I'm also the last one to use an ethnic slur with a name of "brit grit" - a Britisher in the South)

Grace's answer works great. You can also clean your silver jewelery using the same method.
