The magnification of a telescope is the product of the focal length of the objective lens times the focal length of the eyepiece lens.

So both lenses are necessary.

So you can adjust the image being projected on it to suite your vision.. Just like binoculars.. Its also keeps dust and what not out of the telescope. You can buy different eyepieces.. Some provide a crisper image then others.

I assume you mean "lens" and that piece is used to funnel all the light that has been collected to your eye.
