When you move around - you create a displacement of the air behind you which causes a slight vacuum which such the smoke towards you - IE the smoke residue moves towards the slight pressure gradient.

because when you walk you are displacing the air around you and create a sort of suction that pulls the rest of the air with you. if smoke is in that air it is much easier to see.. an easy expirement, put something that floats into a bathtub full of water and put your hand in front of it and move it through the water..it will follow.

i do not know .. but ive tested it on numerous bonfires .. somthing definitely is up ... but really ... ive come to the conclusion that the wind changes direction often even if its tending to be heading one way ...
