I realize they actually still do - albeit in the form of II and III's that lack the amazing storytelling of the original masterpieces and later classics of the early 1990's. What I don't understand is why they no longer theatrically release the type of animation that made them the "go-to" studio. Are any 2-D films in the works, do they plan on reviving this form of animation? Thank you for your time.

This press release was issued on December 19, 2006. The short answer: yes, there are more 2D animated movies in the works. They dropped 2D years ago, but it's coming back.

John Lasseter and Ed Catmull are planning to return the Walt Disney Co.'s studios in Burbank to its roots as a "traditional" (hand-drawn) animation company exclusively, while Pixar will continue to turn out computer-animated (CG) features, Disney watcher Jim Hill reported on his website www.jimhillmedia.com today (Tuesday).

In doing so, Lasseter, the chief creative officer for Disney Animation, and Catmull, the unit's president, will be reversing Disney's efforts over the past three years to, in Hill's words, "retrain that studio's staff as well as to change Disney Feature Animation into a state-of-the-art CG operation." Hill observed that the plan has not yet been "entirely embraced" by Disney CEO Robert Iger.

One result of the about-face, Hill noted, has been the cancellation of Disney's plans to produce the computer-animated American Dog, a movie conceived and supervised by Chris Sanders, who ironically was responsible for Disney's last big hand-drawn hit, Lilo and Stitch.

There isn't a specific answer to why the change happened, but one rumor centers around Chris Sanders who is responsible for Lilo and Stitch and the upcoming film American Dog. Lilo and Stitch, if you can remember, was hand-drawn -- and was a huge success. Perhaps they're hoping the same hand-drawn success with American Dog.

I don't work for Disney and I do not have any info on their inner workings so I can only take a guess.

Creating cartoons the old way involved using slides on which characters were painted on. Reusing slides ended up creating a grainy effect on the film. Today's generation prefer to have their films crystal clear. Using slides also creates storage problems as well as potential fire hazards. Using this logic, it would be easy to see why its more feasible to create 3D cartoons. Slides are actually a valuable collectors item now.

Walt Disney company depended on the popularity of what was in. Walt Disney was a trendsetter, from the beguining, starting from creating the first 3-D camera to the "The making of" movies. He created movies that were cartoon and real life mixed together and once this movie styling of 3-D started, he wanted in. He continues to do movies in 2-D. Of course the company has to comply with the contract that they have with Pixtar and compete with Nickelodeon that also does movies in 3-D

The Frog Princess movie mentioned above is to be hand drawn and will be the first Disney animated film to feature an African-American princess! The film's soundtrack is going to be made by Randy Newman who also contributed to the Toy Story soundtrack...member of VF, I know what I'm talking about! :D

I agree with you completely. Not that their collaborations with pixar arent good but they need to go back to their roots. The 2D animation style is what made people fall in love with disney. They should definately make a couple more 2D movies.
