UC Berkeley and Standford rank with any Ivy League school. UCSF is a medical school that rivals John Hopkins and Yale. In science, Cal Tech is widely regarded as the most exclusive, research-driven university in the US, with more Nobel laureates than MIT with about 1/20th the students and faculty. UCLA and USC are in the top 20 academic institutions, and in general all the UC schools, especially UCSB, UCSD, and Irvine are gaining incredible distinctions every generation.

Not sure about Florida, but I'm sure they have fine institutions also. Of course, all of this depends on what your looking for and what discipline. Don't be fooled by simple statistics. If you're looking to study the physiology of Tyrannosaurus Rex, the University of Montana is the absolute best in the world.

We have the best (or use to have) Public College. UC Berkeley and UCLA are always on top of the list of Public schools. UCSF for medicine is regarded highly. Private colleges we have Stanford, the closest thing to Ivy league you can get with out being Ivy league. We also have UOP, the best for Pharmacy. We also have Cal tech and USC. I heard good things about the Claremont/Pomono colleges. And even our second tier public colleges are ranked high. Cal Poly Pomona is tops in Engineering. FLorida has some too. The only one comes to mind in Embry aeronautical . Its one of the best in Aerospace. GEnerally I think of FLorida for party schools and Football. California rated better than Florida in that too.

I'm guessing you're a prospective HS student wanting to go some place cool for college, right? Well, yeah California and Florida both have great colleges, but you really ought to look around your state a bit and save your parents a load of cash. If you're looking at colleges solely for the location then reconsider that, cause then most likely you'll be partying 24/7 and drop out of college. Instead look for a college that can balance both out.

Yes, California has some of the top colleges in the country: Berkeley, Stanford, UCLA, UC Santa Cruz, UC Santa Barbara, and more. And most of them are public, so they're less expensive. Not so much Florida.

Yes both have very good state universities, and private colleges. If you are a resident of either state you get an excellent education for not a huge amount of money.
