She only replaced the old M about 5 movies ago so how could she be JB's boss in a prequel?

Casino Royale is not a prequel. It is a re-imagining of the series. In other words, it is similar to Batman Begins or the new Star Trek movie. It takes an established storyline an d kind of tweaks it, breathing new life into the story.

So, in this version of the Bond storyline, M has always been Judi Dench.

Its Hollywood after all. Looks like they are rewiritng the history of Bond which could well mean Spectre will feature in upcoming Bond movies. Like the next Batman movie will feature the Joker when he was already introduced and killed in the very first Batman movie with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson.

They decided to restart the clock entirely on James Bond.
Its a pity really. They could have had a cool sequence where Pierce dies on a mission and Daniel Craig is put into intensive conditioning (brain washing) to memorize the details of his new persona, James Bond...an elaborate cover story to protect Craig's family from the bad guys.

I was pondering the same question earlier yesterday. The old M should be in this film, since it is a prequel.

Cause Bonds movies SUCK! They have sucked since Roger Moore stopped being Bond. Obviously, Connery was the best and Moore was a good second choice but the rest SUCKED! James Bond died when the cold war ended. And this wasn't a prequel as it took place today. It just makes no sense. F THEM!
