There are laws to this effect, at both the state and federal level.
They are just incomplete, and many contain loopholes.

In fact, federal law prohibits companies from requiring the use of the Social Security number for any purpose other than relating to income taxation or federal benefits.

But nothing compels companies to do business with you either. So, if you refuse to voluntarily disclose your SSN, a private company can refuse to do business with you. That's one of the loopholes.

Insurance companies, right or wrong, now run your credit. It's part of their risk assessment. There is a movement underway to stop them from doing this, but they fill a lot of poxckets in Washington and elsewhere, so the odds of this being prohibited are not very good.

Insurance companies can require any personal information about you. If you have an accident, they can get all your medical records and use them against you. It's a sick system. They have super good lobbyists & so do attorneys who also benefit from our loss of privacy.

I agree. I am a military recruiter and it drives me nuts that my SSN is all over every enlistment contract I do. I also have a four digit recruiter ID that they could use.

Our society has gotten way out of control with the SSN business. There should be some tougher restrictions.

Your SSN has nothing to do with your driving record.
