Sure they spoil.but at different speeds. Flake food will "spoil" quicker than pellets. Food kept in tightly-closed containers last longer,so if you get a large can, empty the contents into a smaller jar for everyday use and store the rest in the freezer. Freeze -dried food should be kept dry. Vitamins will get weaker over time. Check the expiration date on the package. However,if stored well, most foods will last much longer than the date printed. Keep all foods in a dry closed container.

really depends on the type of food. if it is the dry type, then it will spoil slower and less easily--usually i find that it gets stale but have never seen mold. the fish food companies are pretty good about throughly drying the food. wet food will spoil. mold needs moisture to grow.
however, old fish food isn't that good for your fish--the nutrients will eventually decompose and it just isn't as delicious for your fish! (similar to eating stale cereal that is soft).
storing it in an airtight container in the fridge would help.

Yes. Some manufacturers put a date on the can others have in the past indicated on the label that it was good for a certain time after opening.

One study found that within 3 months from opening over 50% of the vitamin content of the food was destroyed.

YES, after a few months from opening dry fish food you should toss it out. Since fish are more considered decoration versus companion, most companies don't bother to tell you when the food expires.

About 5 months, but that is average flake food. Pellets are about 1.5 years.

Always look on the packaging for a date, if it doesn't have be cautious.

most varieties...NO. if anything has an expiration date on it, it's most likely just to get you to buy something new....marketing schemes..........the only thing that would spoil is something that is fresh (ie LIVE)....flakes, pellets, freeze dried food will NOT go bad.
