I am a percussionist in a band that plays many styles of music. We play 80's rock, alt. rock and spanish rock. The members all want me to play congas in all the numbers. I don't feel right playing congas to "Gun and Roses". Should I give in and play maybe create a new feel or just go with my gut and take that time to go have a beer and smoke.

I don't personally thing congas are a perfect fit for every song, and probably shouldn't be included in ALL the songs you do. But congas can make a nice addition to a rock song I think if done right. Also, have a beer and cigarette anyway. I am.

Not in all the songs. I withdraw myself and use a shaker to go along the drummer's hi-hat. Congas are great if played correctly. You can't play tumbao (the most famous of the conga beats) on every song. It sounds out of place, so the conga rocker will change it to a mix that complements white space pleasantly.

No ..congas should never be played in rock music...The steel drums though are pretty sweet and sounded awesome on Jane Say's by Janes Addiction... that was a great song.

Not all types, but take Deny Me by Soil for instance, those congoes were rightly placed and didnt give it an african tribal feel. If you are interested download limewire and hear it, its a small band from chicago.
