open your case, put new hard drive on same grey ide cable your existing hard drive is on. boot pc, make sure the new hd is showing in device manager.

start, all programs, accessories, system tools, backup. run that program and put the files on the new hd.

If you really want to be safe (I assume you are seeking to create a safety backup at regular intervals), buy a USB or better yet, Firewire-capable outboard hard drive. There are many available pretty cheaply. Depending on how large a drive you want, they can run from about $50 and up. Seagate is one of the better, older names in the business and I just landed a 300 gb drive for about $200. While you can install a second internal drive if your computer has a bay for it, its far easier to use the connectors and go with an external model. All I had to do was connect it via a single Firewire cable, install the backup software and then hit Go. It saved 30 gb of data in about 40 minutes. Presto. It will also backup ONLY any new data you have added since the last dump, so it will take far less time. Here's a good basic place to buy equipment. I have bought from their Mac counterpart and the service is good. I'm "just" a musician and not a tech-maniac, so ease of use is important to me and that's what I got. Just treat any hard drive like the delicate flower the darned things are. They will ALL crap out sooner or later, but consistent care also extends their lives. Hope that helps you out.

if you have identical hard drive - ghost it.

find norton or powerquest software to copy faster - disk block by block rather than drop and drag which is done file by file.... it will take longer time for 200GB Hard drive..
