I can place my car in D2 or over drive (i'm not sure of the correct term), reverse, and neutral, but my shifter will not lock into place for any of these and it won't let me place the vehical in park or drive. The transition it will allow me to make no longer has a click or the 'jerk' that it ussually has when I change gears. It feels as if the gear shifter itself has sprung lose. There are no odd sounds in my car momentarily. I drive an automatice transmission that was only replaced about 6 months ago on a 12 year old Ford Crown Vic.

It is the shifter itself that has broken - not the transmission. usually, there is a piece of metal with a spring behind it that slips into a groove when the car is solidly in a gear. If this piece of metal (or the spring behind it) breaks or comes off, it no longer holds into the groove, so the shifter can move too easily.

Usually not a difficult fix. Lucky you!

the spring on the shifter has broken, look into getting it fixed cause if your driving on the highway or on any street for that matter and accidentally shift into reverse from drive......well it wont be prutty
