It is a way of saying that you are with somebody without saying your gay. Still so many gay men and woman are afraid of societys intolerance and in some cases violence (verbal/physical) that they are uncomfortable to say girlfriend or boyfriend.

its just another word to mean the same thing, i think if you asked someone , anyone they would say it makes no difference, gay or straight. i like the term partner better than significant other though, because sig, other kindof gives me the mental picture that the individuals are not able to be independant without the other....i tprefer partner, girlfriend, boyfriend, wife, or husband better,

I've never liked the word "partner" to refer to a gay person's significant other. If I had a sig other, I would call him my "boyfriend".

However, I think that referring to a sig other as your "partner" is appropriate in certain social settings.

To answer you with another question - why not?

I honestly don't think it matters what you call them - significant other, other half, girl/boyfriend. What matters is that you're both comfortable with it. I'd find it unacceptable, for example, if my boyfriend called me his "husband" *shudder*

I don't. I think "partner" sounds too business casual.... I'm a little too liberal for that. I prefer "boy toy," " f*ck buddy," or "my b*tch." Hahaha.. just kidding. I go with "boyfriend." When I get married, it'll be "husband."

While we still have state-sponsored discrimination in the marriage laws, that's all I can call him.

When the state finally makes marriage available to all its citizens, I will call him my husband. OK?

Because we don't have the benefit of marriage and can't call that person our spouse.
