I really want to be a doctor, but I'm not very smart like some ppl, so I'm afraid my intelligence might stop me from pursuing this profession...

I wonder..which one is more important to being a doc..intelligence or love of mankind (humanity)?

You really have to like and love what you are going to pursue. I am not yet a doctor, but I can say a few things. What reason you have is not too important, but what is important is that you have your own reason to become one; and you really have to stick to it. If you do that, no matter how hard it may be, you can make it through.

There are intelligent doctors who happen to be cruel and even senseless or heartless. They get the nerve to say, "you got cancer and that's why it hurts" to terminally ill patients. What else is there to say because it is true? Yes, very true. The problem is not so much about what they say or how they say, even though how they say can mean a whole lot; the problem is the nerve to treat people like they are things. Perhaps you might have to be a doctor to treat a patient; but you do not need to be a doctor to care for a patient who is a human being with a human heart. It only takes you to be human to care other humans.

To me, I might admire skillfull doctors, but I won't respect them if they cannot treat people as people. It makes me wonder if $$$$$ is all they see on dying patients or suffering patients.

To become a doctor, you need a bit of intelligence, lots of determination and firmest belief in yourself. Do whatever it cames to go through Med Crucible. Once you become a doctor, make sure your heart is humane: that's more important because even a doctor is a human.

in this day and age...

intelligence is a dime a dozen. i know a ton of freakishly intelligent people.

compassion is also overflowing in abundance today as well. it is hard to not turn to some tv channel begging for money for a bleeding heart charity.

so, if youre smart with no compassion...med schools will not likely look at you. nor will they look at you if youre a dumb brick that cries for every bum on the street.

cold hearted smart people are great at research. dumb compassionate people are great at social work.

nowadays, there are also a ton of people who are smart AND compassionate.

soooo......

good luck if youre not too bright. i wouldnt want you working on me.

if you really want to be a doctor, it will not matter what i say. you will keep pursuing it until you attain your goal. if you hit a few obstacles and decide to quit the chase...your heart was never truly into it and it was just a passing fancy.

hard words, eh? if you think i'm mean...if you get into med school...you'll find that i'm a pussycat!

actually both are important....a doc must have an optimum level of intelligence because later times proper diagonesis is most important to love the man kind ( as per his profession)...but intelligence is not everything,if u r not humanitarian and if u dont love a person and to increase your experience and and apply your intelligence keep on researching on patients, that may harm too..
And you please be confident.why do u think u r not intelligent.go for the entrance tests held for medical studies with full preperation and if you are selected then never hesitate to join because they have groomed you and you are eligible enough to take the studies!!!

i think love of mankind, and a desire to help them,,,,, added with ability,,,,,, are all important,,,,,,,, and yes you will need some basic intelligence for the subjects needed to become a doctor,,,,,,, i would imagine very important is the ability to memorize things,,,

as to intelligence, there are many forms of it,,, so i wouldnt compare myself to those around,,,,,,,, even if a subject is difficult for you,,,, you can, with work, master it,,,,,,,
intelligence without a feeling and concern for humanity would not be good in that profession,,,,

If you desire something, with all your heart, then nothing should stop you~!! Your desire to be a doctor, is in itself the love of humanity, your learning will come with the desire~!! Your intelligence is only a word used by society to measure what they think is the proper levels to become something~!! If you have the desire, you already have the intelligence to persue~!! Good luck and God Bless~~~~!!!!

I would say that a solid foundation of concern and love for mankind is a pretty intelligent thing.

To get into medical studies, no matter how intelligent you are, you have to show real interest in people. And actually have real interest in people.

But in the practice of medicine, in my opinion, intelligence and skill are of first importance. I don't want to be treated by somebody who is sopping over with the milk of human kindness, but doesn't know what he is doing.

More important, general love for humanity is important for the doctor as human being, but the doctor as individual, treating the individual patient, has to combine applied knowledge with a specific, listiening and sensing, empathy for the individual human being. When you are treating somebody, you have to focus on them, listen to them, understand them, because that particular person can open up and provide clues, in behavior and discussion, to what really ails him. The doctor needs, among his other skills, to have the skill of a first-class investigative detective, who can get himself into the behavior of his patient and ask two quetions: what's wrong with this patient? and where are the bases for this person's will to cooperate in a lasting cure of his/her problems.

Cultivating this kind of empathy for particular individuals is something you should try to learn through practice in how to listen to, understand, and help people. If you can do this in non-medical fields, you will find it easier to apply it to how you practice medicine, and will be able to magnify your intelligence and skills which you learn and develop through training and practice under the guidance of experienced physicians and specialists.

intellegance... you are handeling peoples lives and they are trusting you to make an educated decision and if your not educated your not going to be good. and anything thats that big is very hard to do and requires patience and intellegance school itself will be hard and then the internship... i will say good luck and i hope if thats your dream you will at least attempt it... but if your not any good by the end of schooling i would say for the safety of others try a diff career, and dont chose a career for money either... do it because its what your heart wants... you could always go into other fields were you get to help peopel too.
