A couple of years ago a somewhat clueless UN commission containing representatives of governments that don't appreciate the free flow of information met to try to decide how the UN, in its great wisdom, could control this upstart threat to the repressive regimes that constitute much of its membership.

The dignitaries were shocked to be roundly laughed at by the rest of the world, including the US, which wants no part of the scheme, and I believe the commission died the death of the proverbial canine. Most Western governments understand the value of an independent Internet. If nothing else, it generates wealth like little else, and for no cost.

How can you "invade" the internet? The internet is information.

The government can access the internet. They can send information over it, and they can take information from it.

But the majority of the internet infrastructure is owned by private companies, so pretty much the only thing the government could do is try to shut it down completely.
