I was doing some housecleaning and found this check dated 5/19/2005, for $123.00. I went to my bank and they said they wouldn't cash it because its over a year old. What options do I have to get this money which I'm entitled to?

I am not sure about CA, but in my state, checks issued by the state are only good for 180 days from the date of issue. After that you are out of luck. The state just keeps the money. The only exception is large sums of money (not sure what the limit is), and in that case they go into an unclaimed property fund, and you have to fill out a lot of paperwork to get the money released to you.

You could try contacting the California State Tax Commission, and asking them if they will re-issue the check if you send them the uncashed one. I don't know if they will do it, but it's worth a try...

That's true, the check that you have is more then 90 days old there for the bank does not cash it... I would say just for get it, since you never did deposit it.. Now if you really want the money, you would have to research about it at WWW.IRS.Gov

hi, what you can do is have the irs, re-issue the check to you..and make sure you tell them that you forgot you had the check and you misplaced it..and what steps can you take to have the check re-issued to you and for it to be current because you havent cashed it yet..you might have to send it back to the state, and they should be able to update it for you..try it it will work..
