To my knowledge, it is illegal to own an assault rifle in the United States. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Certainly possible, though restrictions apply by state.
The NRA's site should have this info.
I don't believe the government has any authority to prohibit or otherwise regulate fully auto or any other weapon, per the 2nd Amendment. Yet somehow they do, maybe because more criminals have them than law abiding citizens.
"Congress have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birthright of an American... The unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state government, but, where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the people"
-Tench Coxe, Pennsylvania Gazette, Feb. 20, 1788
"To prohibit a citizen from wearing or carrying a war arm . . . is an unwarranted restriction upon the constitutional right to keep and bear arms. If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of constitutional privilege."
--WILSON v. STATE, 33 Ark. 557, at 560, 34 Am. Rep. 52, at 54 (1878)
"The practical and safe construction is that which must have been in the minds of those who framed our organic law. The intention was to embrace the 'arms,' an acquaintance with whose use was necessary for their protection against the usurpation of illegal power - such as rifles, muskets, shotguns, swords and pistols. These are now but little used in war; still they are such weapons that they or their like can still be considered as 'arms' which the [the people] have a right to bear."
-STATE v. KERNER; 181 NC 574, 107 SE 222, 224-25
(North Carolina Supreme Court, 1921.)

A automatic weapon is a weapon that should not have been made as it is a weapon that has no class or mystique or value .I only believe that guns should only be in the hands of licenced people with a good enought reason as collecting and art in guns and clay shooting .Black power rifle is more of task than a garbage automatic rifle .I prefer not see guns around familys and a national storage facility built with permission cards to build guns or restore rifles at home for certain periods of time and this will take the gun from the house invader. To commit murder as owning an automatic makes no sense and is a waste of ammunition .Image guns customised like cars with engraved images all over the stock and barrel .Only the uneducated have automatic rifles. The abuser of a tool is a abuser of society.

Yes, in the US you can legally own an automatic firearm.
Not easy........ You'd have to fill out a mile high stack of paperwork, have nothing on your record (I've heard a speeding ticket can get you disqualified), and b prepared for the gov't t go through your life with a fine tooth comb.
If you do manage to get through the process, be prepared to pay the tax stamp on the firearm and the astronomical price (figure better than $10K).
Not easy...................

It might differ from state to state. I live in Idaho and I know people with fully automatic weapons.

Possible? yes Legal? I doubt it. Smart? No. There are PROBABLY more automatic weapons in the big cities than in all the military bases put together. Notice that I said "PROBABLY". Why would you want one? So you can be the first on your block with one, or the ONLY one on your block?

Yes go to the ATF website, it requires a special collectors permit, a payment of a large fee for owning it.

Well, most certainly if, in example, the weapon could reasonably be considered a collectible.
Ask a reputable gun dealer.
