My neighbors have this sandy looking stuff on patches of their lawns. I looked it up, and I'm wondering if they're using green sand. Anyone know anything about this? If it's a lawn secret, I want in on it!

Some fertilizer, plant food, insecticide, and grass seed, ie a lot of gardening products looks like sand. Small beige granules? You sprinkle it on the yard with one of those hopper things that you push and it slings it out the bottom. You can also spot treat a certain area if you want to boost it up to grow in, or if you want to prepare the soil for something big like a tree.

That's my guess, I'm not an expert, but I'm no slouch when it comes to logical thinking. So you can believe me and maybe we'll be right, or you can ask your neighbor and let me know?

Have fun! Don't go to your neighbors house barefoot in the grass. You might burn yourself if it is a chemical.

I just realized this sounds very unkind. Kind of snooty. "well just go over there and ask them, won't you?"...

I didn't mean that. I am a nice person.

LOL. OK, possibly the last poster is right but sand mixed with compost will increase the drainage of a lawn. If your neighbor is indeed using sand, it is most likely to loosen the soil and provide beter flow-through for the water to get to the roots without compacting the earth into a muddy thick cake. Watch his/her results. Might be onto something eh? Why not ask your neighbor dierectly?

He may just be top dressing the lawn as they do on golf courses. Adding enoungh sand as to not cover the top of the grass will promote better drainage and a stronger root system.

Probably it is to level out their lawn. Lots of people use sand to do that.
