Hi...

As an ex-paratrooper and disabled Vietnam-era vet w/only a $900 a month VA disability pension to live off of, I can't afford something too expensive---or features I don't need.

Not a cheapskate, don't like "cheapiness"...but don't need to be wasteful and unnecessarily extravagant either.

I want a unit that prints, makes xerox copies and is a FAX machine. Am writer, not into photography and don't see need for scanner (whatever that is and why).

I want a unit that's truly solid, really rugged, long-lasting, of reliable quality, with excellent warranty and customer service backup....no mickey mouse stuff.

Figure laser is good, as I need to send quality compositions around---same with the FAX capability---but don't want to buy a cheap replacement laser every year, either.

Don't want smudgy/limp FAXes or xeroxes, either.

I'll spend up to $200 for it. My understanding: HP or EPSON is perfect. I would appreciate recommendations/model #s, etc.

Gratefully......

i just recently did a review of many multi-task, all-in-one units. if you don't need color, i found multiple good units in HP and Samsung. HP is the best name and I've owned about 10 of them through my office and my kids at college.
if you want it to make copies, it does have a scanner in it. actually there is no major difference except for copies the "scanner" converts directly to the printed file. for scanning, it saves the file for archive and later use. you can always print the file and be just like a copier.

the best links are frys.com, ecost.com, tigerdirect.com, geeks.com, and of course the good old local boys at best buy and at circuit city.
you will get a much better deal on line or at fry's unless the standard stores are having a sale.

some of the best sales i've seen lately are from office depot!

the unit i bought two weeks ago came from frys because they are only 2 miles away and i could pick it up and it had an instore rebate for $70. however, it was not an all-in-one.

you can get a real good unit in the $200 to $250 range, and when on sale, i've seen some good ones at $175.

and again, i do recommend the HP

Try going to wal mart they usually have decent 3 in 1 or 4 in 1 printers.

The quality in printers and how good they are goes in the following order from low to high: 1. dot-matrix printers 2. bubble jet printers 3. ink jet printers 4. laser jet printers.

A good inkjet printer costs very little these days. As little as $50 and all top brands are about equal. HP, Canon, Lexmark, etc. Go with any of these. And thank you very much for your service to our country. I appreciate all you did and know you can never be repaid. But I remember veterans and the troops daily in my thoughts and prayers.

bubblejet printers don't have good resolution printouts. get either a deskjet or laserjet.

deskjet will cost you around $100, ink cartridge will last a few months, printouts won't be fast
laserjet will cost you a few hundred dollars and toner cartridge will last for a year or 2 depending on how much you print and printouts will be fast
