I missed a step and ended up twisting my ankle pretty badly. I hear a pop and it was so painful that I started getting light-headed and dizzy. After about 10 minutes it started to feel better, and when I looked at my foot and felt around I didn't see or feel any broken bones. So I thought "if it still hurts tomorrow, I'll go to the doctor's". So it was still hurting today and it swelled up.
So I went to urgent care and the doctor there said I tore ligaments. Okay, is that the same thing as a sprain? Thanks!!

There is different levels of sprains (1,2,3). If you completely torn the ligament so that it doesn't hold the two bones together then its a grade III and most likely needs surgery. Grade I and II is where the ligament is intact but stretched and irritated.

Nope, hon, not even close. A sprain is where you over extend the muscle, a tear is just that, where you actually tear the ligament attached to the muscle tissue associated with the area. You can use ginger compresses to stimulate circulation, then take tofu that you've had in your refrigerator and place it on the ankle until the cold goes away. Tofu actually is better tolerated when you have pain than ice is, and a ginger compress is easy to prepare.

Bring 1 quart of water to boil. Take a fresh ginger root and grate it onto a large square of cheesecloth, large enough to hold a ball of ginger the size of a baseball. Close up the cheesecloth, making a bag and squeeze the ginger juice into the boiling water. Place the bag of ginger gratings in the pot and boil for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool somewhat, until you can stand to put your hand into the water. Take a clean cotton washcloth and dip it into the ginger solution. Wrap around your ankle and let set until it begins to cool.

Switch to your Tofu pack, (take tofu, cut a couple of slabs of it, enough to cover the area, place it in some cheesecloth - you might want to double it). Close the bag and lay it on the area. **Note, you can reuse the water and the tofu, so let the water set on the stove or place it in the refrigerator. You can reuse it for 3 - 4 days. Place the tofu back in the refrigerator. You can reuse it for 3 - 4 days also.

**You might want to make two of the tofu plasters so that you can put the first one back in the fridge while you're using the second one.

I certainly hope that you feel better and that this is of some help to you. Take care of yourself and stay off of that foot!

yes it is and it will heal on its own. It will take 3-6 weeks. If pain continues you should go see a doctors again.
