I can't tell you whether it's a "good" computer or not. It depends on what you're going to use it for and whether it meets your needs.

It's generally cheaper to upgrade a computer, provided that there are slots available to add memory cards. You can find memory cards on line that are really cheap and can possibly up grade your computer for $30.00. It also depends on what you will be using the computer for. If it's just to make your computer run faster for reasons of just surfing the net and using it for basic, everyday stuff, I would opt to upgrade. It's just cheaper.
All computers can only accept a certain amount of memory. So without knowing how old your computer is, it's hard to know how much memory it came with or will accept. The computer on your link is a 1 GB (memory), which is really good. Something like this is good for games but if your going to use the computer for something like on-line gaming than you might want 2 GB. If that's the case you want to know if the computer that you have has the capacity to add that kind of memory (which is unlikely).
So I guess it really depends on what you want to use the computer for and whether you can up grade your old computer to suit those needs. For everyday type of use people can get by with 256 MB (memory).
If you still have the manual to your old computer it should say somewhere in it how much memory it can accept. If it were me, my first option would be to upgrade.
Good luck to you.

the days of upgrading comuters in ending. unless you upgrade the amount of memory, the video card, the amount of storage space, or a dvd drive.
sometimes you can justify a cpu upgrade.
but the computers are advancing so fast with faster front side bus, processor advances, ata vs. sata etc.

I would put my money into a new computer.
I'm not sure that is the one I would select?

there is a lot of research available and that may be the one you want. but make sure it performs for your needs: simple internet, a bit of word processing, gaming, CAD work, solidsmodelling, etc.

a quick rundown of the specs, it looks pretty good. I'm surprised they're offering it in the compaq model. since hp bought compaq, most of their computers come with the hp name, and hp is one of the top 3 i recommend.

Try a new operating system first.

UBUNTU (or XUBUNTU if your computer has less than 256MB of RAM).

It's a free, reliable and up to date operating system.

You can explore it from the "LIVE CD".

It's easy to install and use. You can dual boot it with other operating systems.

Once you have it installed, you gain access to thousands of free programs created by the open source community. There is excellent support - see the WIKI starter guide, and the Linux forums.

Always back up your data before making changes to your computer.

Depends on what you want to use the computer for. If you just want to surf the net, send emails and work on Microsoft Office documents, its more than enough. If you want to use it as a high-end graphics computer or for gaming you'd want the most RAM, the biggest hard drive and the fastest processor you could afford.
