HSBC is a large organization that has many different types of securities, so without knowing which type of securities your fried has it is impossible to answer the question.

If they are HSBC Holdings PLC American Depository Shares (ADS) they are indeed worth a little over $88 per share as a previous answer indicated. However, each ADS represents five common shares trading on the London exchange, so if they are common shares they are only worth about one fifth as much. There are also many different prefered shares with varying prices. They also have subsidaries that have their own stock, such as HSBC USA and HSBC Canada.

If the shares are held by a brokerage, he should be able to contact the brokerage to find the answer to his question.

If he holds the actual stock certificate, what was 650 shares 30 years ago may well by something completely different by now. To find out, I suggest he contact the investor relations contact for the country in which he lives. They are listed at

Go to Yahoo Finance and type in HSBC. It should tell you the current price per share. You have to know which exchange it trades on or it may search all the exchanges. If you don't find it, it may have been bought out by another company & you'll have to do some research.

If he has the share certificates, It will indicate the transfer agent used, he could contact the transfer agent, give the certificate numbers and they can tell him if there has been stock splits or are these the only shares, (by the way, who got the dividends all these years). If he has been getting dividends, he knows how to look up the price in the paper, because Every-one looks at their stocks if they are reminded with dividends every 3 months...sumpthin funny here
