Pain started March 5th. Thought maybe I slept on it wrong but I have a waterbed. Tried to just work through the pain. I have no apparent swelling or bruising. Just pain that has went from a 4 to ablout an 8 now. I have an appt on Friday to see the doctor but the pain is getting worse day by day. Should I go to the ER? I haven't fell, slipped, or anything else that would have caused this. Maybe dislocated? The only other thing I think may contribute is I have rotating hips. After childbirth they never fully closed. Could this be a factor? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am debating a drive to the hospital.

Its extremely rare for a bone to randomly break on its own without trauma. Even osteoporotic bones require a trauma let alone a relatively health bone. It could be a variety of things so a doctor's visit would be appropriate. Maybe its the piriformis muscle that has a spasm or the sciatic nerve could be irritated. Who knows what other reasons it could be.

Just make an appointment to your primary care physician and get it looked at. There are clinics in my area - Washington - where you can have a same day appointment (vs. going to an ER).

If the pain is getting worse and has reached an intensity of 8 I'd say you should head for the ER. The fact that the pain is getting worse would concern me.

I broke my tailbone once. Trust me...you know RIGHT away. It hurts and it hurts bad for about a month.

You could check back with your doctor, or how about a chiropracter. A good one should be able to ease the discomfort. That or a good massage therapist. Those are my two calls of choice - my chiro or my daughter who's an LMT. If those two can't fix me...nobody can.

You should see a physician about this - not necessarily ER, but yes see a doctor.

If the problem turns out to be musculoskeletal, there are physcial therapists who specialize in women's health that would be able to help you to sort out this problem.

Go to APTA.org, click on "find a PT", and search your home area.

Good luck!

you dont really say if the pain is constant or just when sitting...i fell off the roof and broke my tailbone (and two vertabraes).. it only hurts when sitting . it takes some sort of trauma for it to break..when i broke it once before was falling off my horse. both times trauma. it took several months to heal. you really know its your tailbone and not an internal organ such as your colon or kidneys.. let the Dr. figure it out.

If you did, your in for a long, painful, road. You will have to get a doughnut to sit on. Someone that I know has broken their tailbone, and she said that it was very, very painful. You are in pain, no matter what you do.
