There may be other ways that this is taught in your school, but I would convert each number to an IMPROPER FRACTION and then multiply out the numbers. In your first examle,
3 1/2 = 3x2/2 + 1/2 = 7/2
5 1/10= 5x10/10 + 1/10 = 51/10
Then 7/2 x 51/10 = 357/20 = 17 17/20
The second problem becomes 7/2 x 9/2 = 63/4
= 15 3/4
Good luck on your test.

3 1/2 = 7/2
5 1/10 = 51/10
a) 7/2 * 51/10 = (7 * 51) over (2 * 10) = 357/20

b) 7/2 * 9/2 = 7*9 over 2 * 2 = 63/4

3.5 x 5.1 = 17.85
3.5 x 4.5 = 15.75
or 7/2 x 51/10 = 7x51 = 357/ 2x10 = 20 ; 357/20 = 17.85 etc
