Ryobi mower 6.5 engine. Model number 11A-545D034. Took it to the shop twice before for the same thing at $50 a pop. I was told that when the blades hit a rock, the timing is knoced off so the blade does not get damaged more. Now the mower won't start until the timing is set. Would rather know how to fix it myself instead of putting more money into it.

Ditto with "daffyduct2006" . It sounds like you sheared the magneto key. It is an aluminum woodruff key that keeps the magneto in time with the crankshaft. It can shear partially or all the way when an object is hit.

Sometimes it will shear only a small amount and make the mower hard to start.

If you feel mechanically inclined you can get a replacement key from your mower dealer or mower shop. Wal-Mart even has them for some mowers. But if you don't feel like the wrench turning type you can have your mower shop do it and it shouldn't cost much or take very long.

Some mowers have a fairly soft flywheel key that shears when the blade hits something so it won't damage the crankshaft. You have to pull the cowling off to get to the flywheel which may require removal of the fuel tank. Once you get to it you have to remove it which isn't always easy. You may need a puller. Once removed you just remove the sheared (or partially sheared) key and replace it with a new one. You can get one from a lawn mower repair shop. Not a terribly difficult job but doing it for the first time it may take you a while...It sounds like under the circumstances its something you need to learn to do...Good Luck...

Bad work they did....
its the flywheel key (aluminum) key, it'll shear when the flywheel (keeps the engine in motion when going through 3 of the 4 strokes) gets stopped dead in its tracks...
The main thing is to use a OEM key... aftermarkets do not have the quality.. and to have the flywheel nut torqued to spec (check with the engine manufacturer)
The keys are like 3 bucks for a small pack of em. The work is not hard if you have the tools.
Just take off everything in your way (gas tank, engine shroud) unbolt the flywheel (use a puller to SAFELY remove it) pop the old key out, put the new one in, put the flywheel on, bolt it down to spec and make sure everything in your yard is picked up.
