Yea, that rarely works. Try to bring out the points of yourself that they are most likely to be interested in. If they like a band tell them casually about the time you saw that band. It's shallow, but having some baser things in common is a great way to get people interested in you. (Being good looking won't hurt).

First of all, you should think better of yourself. You have to think of yourself on a level higher or equal to than them, not them being higher than you. Talk and be yourself, and if they act too good for you, then they are not the person for you.
