I slipped rather hard on my back yesterday and though I can walk around, I have shooting pains in my gluteus maximus while moving around, or sitting on it. My leg is a bit numb as well. Do you think I fractured it? How do I know for sure?

If you fell hard upon it, then there is a chance something may be broken, but it's more likely that you just have an a** contusion(or bruise). Bruises can be very deep and can hurt with movement of surrounding muscles. You may also have pulled a muscle while slipping or while trying to stop yourself from slipping which can also hurt with movement.

I would suggest getting a decently strong over-the-counter pain reliever like doan's back pain relief, tylenol PM if you need to sleep, or just something an extra advil or tylenol. Try these for a day or two and if the pain doesn't subside and/or gets worse then head to the doctor but you should be fine.

The only way to tell for sure is with X-ray and a scan.I would get to my MD's office tomorrow or go to the ER. I would stay off my feet, take some pain relievers, like Tylenol or Ibuprofen, use a ice pack on the sorest part of the hip, after 24 hours use a heating pad to promote healing.Take care. SW RNP

You can only tell a fracture on an xray...it wouldn't hurt to get one done to rule out the fracture. Either that, or you could have a damaged nerve, or pinched nerve due to the muscle being bruised and maybe swelling a bit around the site you landed on....nothing to forget about. It may not even be your 'hip'...your sacroiliac joints are located beside the base of your spine and you may have dislocated them...please get it checked out. I wish you well!

It's possible. You should see a doctor who will help you find out whether or not you fractured your hip bone. I hope your doctor gives you good news that it's not a fracture.

No. If you had a broken hip, you wouldn't be sitting around typing on yahoo answers. Could be a pinched sciatic nerve in your back though.
