in my own experiences , a true friend emails....calls...visits....ect. you after not talking for some days and says," i just want to reassure you i haven't forgotten about you." and then goes on to explain why they hadn't been around....a true friend will always have a reason for not being around....and through the test of time i know that when my true friend hasn't been around for a while, it's because something has happened with him.
i've got two (one on earth), and honestly one is all i ever desired. ^_^. (the friend not on earth is Jesus)

A person who:
1) You can say anything around them and not be afraid of their reaction
2) Defends you against criticism
3) Never betrays you in any way (from as little as laughing with a mean comment to as big as cheating on your boyfriend)
4) You can call them bawling and know they'll listen and provide you comfort
5) Will always try to help you in any sticky situation
6) Will support you with whatever you choose to pursue (if it's not harmful to yourself)
7) Will call out a situation in which you could endanger yourself in, even if you don't like to hear what they have to say.
I can only count 2 true friends. Remember: You don't have to have a lot of friends - I'll state the cliche that quality outweighs quantity by a landslide. If you have 1 then I think you're already in good shape.

A true friend is there for you, to comfort you and be with you, but the true friend is also looking out for you and disagrees with you when they think you're wrong. What a true friend isn't is to just agree with you on anything and everything.
You know when you have true friend when you always end up going to that person in a time of need and he/she is there to listen. True friends don't come often, and you should only be able to count with one hand the number of "true" friends you have.
I have three true friends, my wife, my college buddy, and a colleague I've known now for over ten years who is the Godmother of my eldest daughter...

If your together and cool after being at each others throats. When you say that he/she's completely wrong and out of his/her mind without fear, when you know a celebration isn't a celebration if that person isn't there, if watching sports isn't as exciting as it can be... or a conversation as rich as it should be. It's when both of you do nothing and in the end say... "that was fun".
I can count 1... and we've been through alot.

In the end I'll always count on myself but I would believe Josh should always have my back when it matters. I am just getting to know other people. I'll make sure who I am friends with is loyal and I can trust very well and feel safe with.

"HI"!!! somehow, I always get involved with the right ppl.. therefore, I think I have a lot of true friends...
to me, the measure of a true friend isn't what they do for u, it is often the way we look at them... (that didn't make sense...) well, if u see ur friend as a gud friend, then it rarely goes wrong.. =p
I consider everyone who comes to help in my time of need a true friend, everyone who says "hi" "hello" or "how are u" to show that they see me, I exist & they care... who says "sorry" when they make a mistake or speaks for me when I can't.. they are all true friends.. & u have to believe that every one of those "hi"(s) come from the heart... & there are rarely friends who say "I love u" out of the blue.. therefore, if I count everyone "hi" I get & "I luv u"(s), I think I wud need more fingers on my right hand.. ^^"
have a nice day!!~

“A true friend stabs you in the front.”—Oscar Wilde
I have about 6 friends who I've known for years. They live in different parts of the country now; most married. I know for a fact that I will know them when I am old. You can't call someone a friend until you've known them for many years. People you hang out with in school are acquaintences. If one stand up for you, even if it makes her/him look bad, you know she/he is a friend. A friend will always be honest with you.

i have one true 2 true friends
and to be honest it's tough to know
sometimes we have people in our life that are there for a special period of time but surprisingly they disappear even tough we thought they are our friends.
people come and go in life
and so do friends
the friends that stay for a lifetime.... not everybody got them.
especially if you are outgoing and change things a lot.
if a friend is there for you in good times, bad times, quiet times, fun times, times you have things to offer, and times you will have to be given... and many others... that's TRUE FRIEnD.
