If there's smoke that usually means the circuits are fried. The circuits on your board usually operate under very low voltage. Just a static discharge can damage it. If there was smoke, I think the motherboard is shot. If your motherboard had a short circuit, you could not use your computer, yet here you are asking this question. Something doesn't make sense and I think what doesn't make sense is me answering this question.

I don't know.
You should immediately turn off your computer and open it to find out where it coming from.
It does no good asking us the visual detail of where it coming from if you use your pair of eye.
1. Stop the computer
2. Disconnect power cord immediately
3. Open the machine
4. Inspect and give at least some power needed to find the damages.
5. Replace it!
6. Test the machine
