Nope. You can't have people of 'Mexican' descent any more than you can have people of 'American' or 'Canadian' descent. Mexicans are primarily of Spanish descent. White, English-speaking North Americans are primarily of British descent, and white, French-speaking North Americans are primarily of French descent.

Maybe in a few hundred years you could be of 'Mexican' descent, but not yet.

RE:
Are there any Mexican professional hockey players in the NHL?

While I'm not going to argue with those who do this for a living, I would put Hemsky, who is underrated as a playmaker, above Frolov, Kariya, and Ribiero, who aren't even the best on there teams and I'm not sure belong in the top 50. But as you said, there is a small difference in points. I must really be out of the loop. When did Scott Niedermayer re-sign with New Jersey? He's a Free Agent as well come July 1st, isn't he? Where is Mark Striet? Is he the highest Islanders player? If you get a chance.... Thanks very much for posting, LITY

Yea, they're correct, Scott Gomez is and a matter of fact since Scott Gomez entered the NHL, two more Latino hockey players have followed suit, namely Raffi Torres, forward for the Edmonton Oilers (born in Canada of Peruvian parents). And Al Montoya, netminder for the New York Rangers (American-born of Cuban descent).

there have never been a Mexican NHL players. yes Scott Gomez his parents are from there but he was born in Alaska. but Mexico is also part of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and you will see some in maybe the next 20 years a few might actually make the NHL born in Mexico.

2006 Mexico is currently ranked 39th in the world in the IIHF.

Manny Fernandez is Mexican. Here's another tidbit of knowledge... before he made the NHL, he played for the Michigan K-Wings (aka Kalamazoo Wings) of the now defunct IHL.

All the other blather aside - there is NO player born in Mexico currently playing in the NHL. Given the high cost of playing the game as a kid I sincerely doubt there are many parents in Mexico who have the menas to pay for their kids to play the game. Sad but true.

Scott Gomez may have been born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska but he is still a Mexican. Being Mexican is not just being from a certain country or state, it is a race. He is not white, he is Mexican.

So, in answer to your question, yes there is a Mexican in the NHL--Scott Gomez.
