1st, the comp.is old, Windows 98 plus. I get this "internet explorer error" thing that pops up EVERY FEW MINUTES, causing me to go offline. Also, the "disc clean up" thing pops up constantly, usually with nothing to clean up, cuz I just did it a minute ago!! I can't 'reformat' cuz I don't have the disc. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

hey isis...there could be lots of things going on here...but you GOT to save up a few hundred and get a basic new computer from walmart or somewhere. You dont need much...

If you insist on keeping your 98 alive, find and use 2 good free programs: Ccleaner and Superantispyware. I think they both can do you a lot of good...but start saving those extra dimes girl...

Upgrade to Windows 2000. Updates are no longer developed for Win 98. This should solve your problem, at least for a while until 2000 becomes absolete as well. But 2000 works very well and offers more security and does not need a whole lot of space like XP and higher.

Before you do that though, it sounds like you've got a virus or spyware. If you don't have an antivirus installed go here and download AVG it's free and it's coupled with Ewido which is a very good spyware removal program. Download them, run them, see how the system works. Then you can consider the upgrade thing.

Could you be more descriptive? What is the "internet explorer error thing"? What's the message you're getting? If you purchased the computer from a manufacturer you should be able to call them and get another copy of the recovery disk. However, if it's that old and it's got Windows 98 on it, you may just think about getting a newer computer.

This might be a virus. Download an antivirus program, and if it detects any viruses, it will fix them or give you directions on what to do next. The antivirus program I use is Grisoft's AVG free version. It has worked for me for over 7 years.

If you are unable to fix it, or reformat your drive then I would suggest taking it to the place you bought it from or stores like Best Buy or Circuit City and ask for them to help you.

Sounds like what happened to me about a week ago nothing I did helped so I had to call Microsoft and they walked me through it and cleaned it up.

looks like your PC got virus infected. take off the hard disk, attach it to some other PC with up-to-date anti-virus software installed, and scan the entire disk.

Sounds like a virus to me, and it almost never does sound like a virus.
