Is it logical to have any kind of pet animal, that isn't put to work for the good of it's owner? Probably not, but I don't have my pets because they give me a 'logical' response, I have them because they help me to understand my own spirit, give me a sense of well being, and create an emotional response. I provide them with a comfortable life, and they make mine more comfortable too. They keep me grounded and enable me to be closer to nature. They are companions in my life's journey. I never chose a human friend because of logic. Why would I use that as a yard stick to choose my animal friends?
I have 6 cats, 2 dogs, a rabbit, a tortoise and 2 horses. There is no logic, indeed I often consider myself mad, for having my life so full of animals. But it is a wonderful life...

In my opinion alot of today's horses are pets. Yes we ride them,but we also play with our dogs and cats too. If a horse isn't being used for work,in other words not necessary to your making a living,then what else are they but a real cool pet? Logical,well,what does that have to do with anything? You have pets because you enjoy the presence of that animal and as long as you can provide proper care for them,there's nothing wrong with that.

If you have a place and the money to keep a horse they make a great pet. I have always been horse crazy and started "breaking" and training them about 27 yrs ago. When I was a teenager my horse was my best friend because he was always there if I need someone to talk to or if I wanted to race cross country and he never told anyone my secrets. I rarely get to ride anymore but still own horses just have them around.

After my old mare was retired, She was 22 and though in good shape needed her rest. An older woman said she wanted her for a pet, she had a small pasture and just wanted her to love and groom. They were very happy together for 6 years. Horses are very affectionate creatures and make excellent pets. My old show horse, Comanchee, took a nasty fall in a competition and was unridable from that day on. He was only 7, now his favorite game is tag with me and he seems very content with his life. If you love the animal they will make a wonderful pet.

there could be 2 meanings to "pet" here...for people who "work"(ranch, farm and show and even here ranch and farm would say show horses are nothing more than pets, though i strongly disagree).........i was told my mare was a pet and spoiled because she was my friend and pleasure horse. today i breed horses as i can no longer ride. when i bought a paint filly recently i was given a pony filly. she isnt any good for breeding as she has genetic deformities which also make it impossible for even the lightest child to ride her. i dont forsee her even having the strength to pull a cart. does this make her useless to me? no. she is intelligent and loving and eager to please. if everyone thought horses such as these should be destroyed because they were physically useless, they would miss a world of love. a horse can be a wonderful friend and confidant as my first mare was. that alone could mean the world to kids that feel insecure. and if the horse cant be ridden, and the child has a fear of riding, then this type of horse would be a great way to help overcome the fear.

Most people that own horses are people that ride because there is a lot to taking care of horses-- you have to be really dedicated and know about the ferrier, certain shots, wormer, feed, excersize etc... if you own a horse you dont ride you need to know how to excersize, unless it is really old. I think its logical to own an older horse that has been saved from slaughter. But you cant just keep it in your backyard, you need a pasture, a shelter etc...

i dont think anyone should have a "pet" horse, unless its for a little kid or something and they take care of it. if people are going to have horses they should ride or do something with them at least 4 times a week. why would u wanna waste a horse. if all youre going to do is have it be a 'lawn ornament' dont get one. buy a stuffed pony and nail it to the barn or something. lol. yeah but people who actually show or rodeo take care of there horses so thats good. i rodeo all over and show wp sometimes and love it. we dont have any 'pasture ponies'

I know a few people that keep "lawn ornaments", if that is what you are referring to (a horse that for one reason or the other you don't ride). If the disposition of the horse is sweet and can be a good friend, is healthy, and you are swimming in money, is ok.
If the horse is a pain in the butt, has bad laminitis making him miserable, and/or you are not millionaire, no... is not logical.
Horses are expensive, is cruel to keep him if you can't afford proper care and food, and there is no point in keeping a horse that is in pain or has a tendency to kick or bite and may hurt you.

I have two minature horses that are house broke and live in my house. They like to spend most of their time indoors. You can teach them to play ball, catch the frisbee, answer phones, wake you up, lead the blind, do tricks, and so on. You can teach a horse what you can a dog including attack training. The attack training is probably reserved for specific horses that can get quite onry.
They have minature horses now riding in the passenger compartments of airplanes. They are also found the minature horse can hold it's waste for the entire six hour flight.

One of my co-workers has a pet horse. They saved it from slaughter. They don't ride her any more but she's like 20 years old. It's expensive to keep a horse. So for me it would be very illogical.
