For some reason, whenever the college basketball tournament comes around it makes me wonder just how great it would be if Division I Football were able to have a playoff. Obviously it wouldn't be on the same scale, but it would be incredible. The major bowls could still have their yearly rotation in who hosts the semi-finals and final games. You could do a 16 team playoff, let a committee sit down and decide who gets in. It adds 4 games to the season, but it's no different then the NFL or Division I-A, I-AA.

And I'm well aware that Division I is no where near getting rid of the BCS, I'm just entertaining the thought.

So do you like the BCS or would rather have a playoff system? And why?

My team is Louisville. And I'm not mad cause they're not good everytime, actually I'm glad when they do well anytime. They could use the regular season to determine seeding, so the regular season would still matter. But only a playoff can give you an outright national champion without the risk of having several teams be up for it. You either play your way to the championship or you're done.

And Louisville has had excellent teams before, but had to move to the Big East to even have a shot. It shouldn't be like that.

Well there are several aspects to look at. First of all, most of the bowl games have tradition and history written all over it (for instance, the Rose Bowl). These games invite massive amounts of fans and represent a major economic boost for several colleges to improve upon education, athletics, and anything else that is neccessary.

Second of all, D 1-A is the major outlook for the future NFL players. With a longer schedule that would encounter major injury scares and maybe too much wear and tear on the player to perform for the next level. That may sound stupid in most people's eyes, but really every other division of college football is rather overlooked by NFL Scouts. And yes I know Jerry Rice did not play in 1-A football. The fact is that even a bowl game at the end of the season may just be one game too long to damage their chances at the NFL. The sad point of all this is that for most of these student athletes, football is their only choice to make it somewhere. Most of the atheletes take fluff classes which in turn puts the pressure of making it pro.

Third of all, a playoff system with 16 teams would cause too much controversy. If you did it by conference champs then you would have 11 teams in and then throw in at least one from the independent. So 12 teams are in. Four others may be chosen, but how does a matchup of an SEC vs. Conference USA sound? Not too good in my opinion. If you do without the conferences and just take the top 16 teams ranked in the nation, then we would have the controversy of where the teams are ranked. And then again, there would be 3 Big Ten, 4 SEC, 3 Big East, 2 Pac-10, 2 Big 12, 1 WAC, and 1 Mountain West. Not something fans would like to see with not having any ACC teams make it. Plus, we all know that the 16th spot would be the most controversial.

The BCS works just fine for the players and myself.

Even in the Basketball system, they are trying to force more teams to be added.

why does everyone hate the bcs........ it works for the most part, sometimes it may not get it exactly right but it's the best way for NCAA D-1A football to do it, its worked this long, everygame has to count so no teams can take a day off, everythign matters when you have the bcs, maybe the system doesnt work in favor of some peoples favorite teams (like mine, im a michigan fan and wanted a ohio state vs mich rematch for the championship) but thats to bad. Your team cant be the best everytime....the bcs works...

Playoff system without a doubt...The BCS sucks...It is political...Small schools who don't get the press like big schools should be recognized...D-1AA has a playoff which I think is awesome...
