It is called the "golden age phenomenon" that there was a better time before this one, some halcyon era. It comes from a natural tendency toward health. The good moments are more real than the bad ones because they are more functionally useful memories.
This applies only to memories of events with normal levels of intensity. In high level intensity events, the opposite is true, the bad is often remembered more than the good. For example, PTSD from traumatic experience is vividly recalled for long periods. By contrast, how clearly can you remember the details of your sexual experiences which were intensely pleasant. The mediating factor in what the brain remembers is intensity.

Well, it makes since from an evolutionary standpoint. Any species that remembers bad moments more than good moments would probbly be so depressed it would kill itself off. So, call it a survival tactic.

Every one of us has this self- portrait of ourselves, this belief that we are moral and a good human being. Our brain chooses to remember the good memories more because this acknowledges and further emphasises that we are good, moral human beings, we dont like to remember the beings because it goes against our self-portrait.

I don't agree with you. I think we remember both but we prefer to think of the good because it makes us feel better. Doing this reinforces the good memory & eventually we will forget about the bad (hopefully).

Because we couldn't survive as a species. It's a survival instinct. We'd all commit suicide if we only remembered the bad things.
